High-Tech and Training Strengthening Student Safety
Enoch: Safety is always the top of mind.
Slats: for chief and all of the school system, making sure students are safe starting at the moment they close the door behind them on the way to school.
Enoch: We are always in a prevention mode. We're always in a preparedness mode. We got to stay ahead of of the threats that are out there. We got to imagine, you know, what could go wrong and create scenarios or scenario. And tabletop exercises is something we do a lot of.
Rodriguez: We try to spend a lot of time doing throughout the year, breaking down perceived barriers and building relationships.
Slats: Those relationships are with students, faculty, and other law enforcement agencies.
Enoch: We work with CEMA, you know, the coordination training with all the different first responders are critical.
Rodriguez: We have created a regional training facility here in Savannah. The first one, of its kind. There is no other in the country that does, the processes that we do. The other thing that we spent a lot of time on was communication, de-escalation and recognizing things that would may go initially unnoticed because our officers are in the schools with these students every day. They know them. So when they notice change in behaviors or changes in attitudes, those are all characteristics that lead to a massive a mass shooting event. So officers have to be familiar with it. They have to recognize, hey, I need to get this kid to this counselor, or I need to get in touch with student success and get some of the psychologist or psychiatrist in to assist that student and provide them whatever the services that they need. It seems to be working pretty good.
Pratt: We continue to enhance camera systems and video management systems, as well as a whole bunch of other, technology throughout the building. All of our facilities have access control, the front doors. They have additional layers of access control at other entry points. We continue to grow and, and build that program out as well.
Slats: Some of the newest technologies being utilized can detect vaping and elevated noise levels. It's all part of providing a safer environment in the Savannah Chatham County Public School District. I'm Ken report.
